Life's What You Make It

I was talking with my roommate the other day.  I was telling her about some of my past dating experiences and she told me that I should start a blog or write a book about all of the stories I have.  So here I am, starting a blog to share all of the gems I've obtained over the years.  Don't worry, real names will not be used.

I wasn't exactly sure how to start writing about my dating experiences.  I didn't want to start off with some really intense stories that overwhelmed anyone and set expectations incredibly high.  Then I remembered a couple dating experiences that are fun memories to think about.  These both happened at the Orem LDS Institute's Valentine's Dances, two years in a row.

The first year I went, I was set up with this guy that I did not really know.  I was set up by one of the institute teachers a couple hours before the dance. He came to pick me up and was plenty tall.  This was definitely a plus for me considering I'm 5'10", so finding taller guys isn't the easiest task for me.  He was very scruffy though but I just wanted to go out and have fun.  We get in the car, and the other couple is sitting in the back seat.  The girl introduces herself and then tells me how she's really good at making Chewbacca noises.  She then proceeded to show off her Chewbacca impression for the ten minute drive to the dance.  I knew at that point that I was in for quite the treat.  All I could do at that point was just laugh and embrace what was happening.

There was dinner served at the dance and it was pretty good.  Then it was time to start dancing.  There was a live band there playing some big band music.  I wasn't sure how to dance to this kind of music, but my date definitely did.  I was terrified.  He started swinging me across the floor, throwing me left and right.  I had no idea what was happening, I just knew that I was spinning a lot.  He then went to dip me and I froze.  He dipped me and told me I was like a wooden plank.  Well, guys have tried to dip me in the past, but I've been dropped over and over again.  So I just stiffen up whenever anyone attempts anymore.  It's a skill I'm still working on.

We continued to dance for a good while, and then I heard that they needed help in kitchen.  I told my date that I was going to go help out.  I continued to dishes in the kitchen with the institute teachers until around 1 in the morning.  I was so exhausted.  I'm sure I said some embarrassing things on the drive home, but I was too tired to care.  I can always still count on him for a good laugh.

The next year, his friend asked me to the dance.  This guy is super nice and we had become good friends.  Only problem was, he was about four inches shorter than me.  I'm not a shallow girl.  I've tried dating shorter guys, but have never had a good experience, so I'm always a little leery when shorter guys ask me out.  I was not very excited for this date, not because of the guy, but because I didn't have much energy.  I had gotten a concussion and was nervous to be somewhere with loud music and attempting to dance.  My head already was in a lot of pain.  My mom asked me who my date was with.  When he picked me up, my mom started telling him all these things she knew about his life.  Where his dad lived, where he went on his mission, and a couple of other things.  Needless to say, he was a little creeped out.

I felt terrible because I was probably an awful date.  I was in pain most of the time, so I think we ended up dancing for one song and left the dance really early.  He was very sweet and thoughtful throughout the whole evening though.  I was grateful for how good he was to me that night.

The lesson I learned from these two dates?  Have a good attitude and you never know what friendships will come out of the dates you go on.  These two guys are still dear friends to me.  Remember that your circumstances are what you make of them.

Obviously I can't post pictures of the guys I write about, so I'll just post pictures that relate instead.  If there ever end up being good, juicy stories, pictures will probably/hopefully be included.

Me and my little brother so excited to see Michael Jordan!

My sister and I so disappointed when we found out Michael Jordan
wasn't actually coming to the Utah Flash D League basketball game.
We didn't hold grudges.....for too long.  We tried to make the best of our
circumstances and enjoy the rest of the game.

Don't worry.  Next story is definitely more exciting.
